What to see and do in El Pego

El Pego
Village
El Pego is a village in the Zamora region of La Guareña, situated in an extensive steppe surrounded by pine and holm oak woods, part of it protected within the Llanuras del Guareña SPA; it now has 268 inhabitants, far from the 940 it reached in 1950. Queen Urraca I ceded this territory to the Order of San Juan in 1116, and in 1782 the parish church of San Clemente, patron of the village, was built on a tree-lined square with a stone fountain; it holds a 17th-century baroque image of the Inmaculada. Its festivities include the Nativity of Our Lady on 8 September, Candlemas on 2 February and a pilgrimage on Easter Sunday and Monday to the pine wood by the Pego lagoon.

Monument
Raised in 1782, it holds above the altar a seventeenth-century Baroque Immaculate Conception 1.10 metres high; the village celebrates its titular on 23 November and the Virgen de la Tramposa on 8 September.

Nature
The village sits on a broad steppe plain surrounded by pine and holm oak woods, within the Llanuras del Guareña SPA, a refuge for the open-country birds that prompted the designation of the area.

Curiosity
The village went from 227 souls in 1849 to a maximum of 940 inhabitants in 1950 and to 268 in 2025; at Easter it still climbs in pilgrimage festival to the pine wood by the lagoon and on 2 February it recites the coplas of the Candelas.
