What to see and do in Vadillo de la Guareña

Vadillo de la Guareña
Village
Village in the comarca of La Guareña, in Zamora, situated on a plateau at an average elevation of between 800 and 820 metres, in the valley through which the Guareña river flows, amid fields of dryland and irrigated cereal crops and vineyards; it has 240 inhabitants. Its name comes from the Latin vadum, ford, with the diminutive -illo, referring to a small crossing point of the Guareña river, which also gives its name to the Zamora comarca and to the neighbouring Salamanca comarca of Las Guareñas. Its church of San Miguel Arcángel retains the Romanesque solidity of the 12th century in its tower and houses a polychrome Romanesque Virgin from that same period.
The church of San Miguel Arcángel de Vadillo
Monument
Of Latin cross plan with a Renaissance transept, it holds a twelfth-century polychrome Romanesque Virgin, the oldest carving in the municipality; it is completed by the hermitage of the Santo Cristo del Humilladero and the ruins of that of Montserrate.
The Roman bridge of Vadillo
Monument
A bridge of stone arches and Latin origin that has been connected with the course of the Vía de la Plata; it crosses the Guareña in a municipal district that queen Urraca I handed in 1116 to the Hospitaller knights.
The poplar and willow banks of the Guareña
Nature
Poplars, ash and willows accompany the river as it passes through the municipal district, where otters, herons and night herons have been recorded; the continental Mediterranean climate leaves here between 400 and 500 millimetres of rain a year.
The pisto guareñés
Food and drink
Together with garlic soup, roast lamb and lentils with chorizo, the pisto guareñés defines the local table, washed down with tempranillo and garnacha wines and accompanied by artisan cured meats and sheep's cheese.
The military call-up of 1246
Historical milestone
The infante Alfonso ordered in 1246 the residents of Vadillo to render military service; sixty years earlier, in 1186, bishop Guillermo and prior Pedro Areis had agreed the ecclesiastical rights of the place.
