What to see and do in Villabuena del Puente

Villabuena del Puente
Village
Villabuena del Puente is a town in the comarca of La Guareña, in the province of Zamora, which was known simply as Villabuena until 1916. Its origins go back to the Bronze Age: in 1959 a farmer discovered at the site of La Peña a tomb of the Bell Beaker culture containing the skeleton of an adult male, accompanied by the famous Bell Beaker grave goods of Villabuena — three decorated vessels, a copper dagger, an archer's wristguard and a gold band — which may have belonged to a local leader who lived between 2900 and 1600 BC and is now kept in the Museum of Zamora. In the early modern period it belonged to the province of Toro, within the Toro archpriesthood. It retains its Renaissance church of San Pedro and a Roman bridge over the Guareña that gave it its name, and today has 574 inhabitants.

Monument
The bridge of Roman origin that crosses the Guareña gave the village its name when, in 1916, the municipality went from being called Villabuena to Villabuena del Puente to distinguish itself from its peninsular namesakes.

Curiosity
In 1959 a Bell Beaker grave assemblage dated between 2900 and 1600 before Christ appeared at the site of La Peña, one of the oldest Bronze Age assemblages documented in the whole of La Guareña.

Nature
The river crosses the municipal district at 697 metres of altitude, where the municipality borders Toro, La Bóveda and Castronuño; its 574 households in 26 square kilometres give the highest population density in the comarca.

Activity
On 16 August San Roque is celebrated, the main festival, with mounted bullfighting, bull-runnings and heifers; Lunes de Aguas, the second Monday after Easter, and the Virgen del Rosario in October complete the calendar.
