What to see and do in Guarrate

Guarrate
Village
Guarrate is a village of 313 inhabitants in the La Guareña region, at the southern tip of the province of Zamora, set on a hill between the Valdeladrones and San Pedro streams, whose waters flow into the river Guareña. Its church dates from 1232 and was rebuilt in the 18th century to plans by Simón Gavilán Tomé. In the second half of the 19th century it belonged to the marquis of Viesca de la Sierra, whose manor house is today the seat of the town hall; in 1900, by then under the marquises of Santa María de Silvela, an eight-day fire destroyed much of the village, which its owners helped rebuild by donating the timber needed. Every last Sunday of January the quintos run the gallo (a traditional race).
The wine cellar quarter of Guarrate
Monument
Dug out of the sandstone, the underground wine cellars form a quarter of their own on the edge of the built-up area; a municipal census of 2026 catalogued seventy-four cellars plus one traditional agricultural excavation.
The church of Santa María de la Asunción
Monument
Its origins go back to 1232; after being left half-ruined around 1711 it was rebuilt in 1726 and 1756 to designs by the architect Simón Gavilán Tomé, and the present bell tower dates from 1956.
Running the Rooster
Activity
On the last Sunday of January the young men recount the year's mishaps, blaming them all on a stuffed cockerel, which they then try to strike at a gallop; it is one of the most singular conscripts' rites in Zamora.
The hermitage funded by an indiano
Monument
Pedro Toribio Fonseca Pérez, an emigrant to America, paid for the hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Tránsito: its first stone was laid on 15 May 1892 and it was blessed on 15 April 1893, to designs by the master Magín López.
The eight-day fire of 1900
Historical milestone
A fire that burned for eight days destroyed a good part of the village in 1900; in 1924 the property passed to five residents of Fuentesaúco and later the Instituto Nacional de Colonización shared it out among the inhabitants.
The valleys of El Juncal and La Presa
Nature
The village sits at 735 metres of altitude between the valleys of the Juncal and the Presa, in a municipal district of 31.6 square kilometres situated forty kilometres south of the Zamora provincial capital.
