What to see and do in Cernadilla

Cernadilla
Village
Cernadilla is a municipality in the province of Zamora, in the comarca of La Carballeda, which brings together, alongside the eponymous town, the settlements of San Salvador de Palazuelo and Valdemerilla; a fourth hamlet, Anta de Tera, was submerged beneath the Valparaíso reservoir. Located on a plain on the banks of the Tera river, between the Cernadilla and Valparaíso reservoirs, its name comes from Low Latin and alludes to light, humus-rich soils. In the Middle Ages it was part of the Kingdom of León, and in the early modern period it belonged to the Lands of the Count of Benavente: the Venta de Cernadilla, owned by these counts, bore witness to their jurisdiction over the place well into the 19th century. With 105 inhabitants, its municipality has lived off rye, late wheat, flax and livestock farming.
The hermitage of the Cristo de Cernadilla
Monument
The hermitage of the Cristo accompanies the parish church and the town hall in the small centre of Cernadilla, raised on soils of dark slate at 936 metres of altitude above sea level.
The Cernadilla reservoir
Nature
The dam bearing the village's name forms, together with that of Valparaíso, the chain of reservoirs on the río Tera; beneath its waters lies the submerged former settlement of Anta de Tera, now vanished from the map. The reservoir stretches upstream, depending on the flow of the Tera, to near Puebla de Sanabria, and ends at the dam itself, located within the municipal district of Cernadilla.
The Tera plain and the slates
Nature
The municipal district extends flat along the left bank of the Tera over dark slates crossed by little veins of quartz, with oak as the dominant vegetation and the A-52 motorway crossing it from side to side.
Las Candelas and San Blas
Activity
On 2 February the Virgen de las Candelas, patroness of the village, is honoured, and on the 3rd San Blas, the patron; they are the great festivals of winter, completed with the popular celebrations of the month of August.
The annexation of Valdemerilla
Historical milestone
The municipality reached its present extent in 1940 by taking in Valdemerilla, which in 2024 still had six residents; together with San Salvador de Palazuelo, the municipal district today gathers little more than a hundred inhabitants.
