What to see and do in Rosinos de la Requejada

Rosinos de la Requejada
Village
Rosinos de la Requejada is a municipality in Zamora, in the Sanabria district, with 292 inhabitants spread across ten villages — Rosinos, Anta de Rioconejos, Carbajalinos, Doney de la Requejada, Escuredo, Gusandanos, Monterrubio, Rionegrito, Santiago de la Requejada and Villarejo de la Sierra — and several Iron Age hillforts. Located in the north-west of the province, among the mountains and peneplains of the basin of the Negro river, a tributary of the Duero, it preserves a notable sample of Sanabrian popular architecture, both civil and religious, concentrated along the road that crosses its urban centre. Its church of Santa Colomba was built in 1774 over an earlier Romanesque one, reusing in the porch an inverted capital carved with a bird with a serpentine body.
The church of Santa Colomba
Monument
Raised in 1774 over Romanesque foundations of the eleventh to thirteenth centuries, it reuses a capital with a serpentine bird and a base of Attic profile; it was restored at the end of the seventies leaving the stone exposed.
The hillforts of Peña Castriello and Valleciudad
Nature
The municipal district preserves several fortified Iron Age settlements —Peña Castriello, Valleciudad and Peñas de la Cerca— which prove a dense occupation of these valleys long before the Leonese resettlement.
The heathlands and wet oak woods
Nature
Heathland covers close to forty per cent of the municipal district and reforestation pine woods another third, among damp oak groves and grasslands; wolves, otters and eagles move through them, with summits exceeding two thousand metres.
Gusandanos, a village with no inhabitants
Curiosity
Of the ten settlements of the municipality, Gusandanos appears with no registered population and Escuredo with three households, while Rosinos itself barely reaches eighty; the whole adds up to 292 inhabitants in the middle of the upper Tera.
The festivities of the Santo Cristo
Activity
On 14 and 15 September the village celebrates the Santo Cristo, whose nineteenth-century hermitage preserves a small altarpiece; in 2015 a cultural association also revived the August cultural celebrations.
