What to see and do in Asturianos

Asturianos
Village
Asturianos is a village in Zamora of 252 inhabitants, the head of a municipality with Cerezal, Entrepeñas, Lagarejos, Rioconejos and Villar de los Pisones, in Sanabria, beside the boundary with La Carballeda marked by the Marras, two large stone boundary markers from the time of the Emperor Alfonso VII. The municipal area, close to the Lago de Sanabria natural park and the Sierra de la Culebra, was inhabited before the arrival of Rome by the Zoelae, an Astur tribe settled on the nearby Castro hill, also called Castro de Curucuta. In Roman times it lay close to the settlement of Petavonium, at Rosinos de Vidriales, and to the road that linked Asturica Augusta with Bracara Augusta. Its church holds a main altarpiece that Jerónimo del Campo began in 1652 and which was not painted until 1685.
The main altarpiece of the church of the Asunción
Monument
It was begun in 1652, painted in 1685 and modified in 1712, and is attributed to Jerónimo del Campo; it is accompanied by two side altarpieces from the first half of the eighteenth century and a Gothic baptismal font.
The oaks, yews and hollies of the municipality
Nature
Groves of carballo oak, yews, hollies, chestnuts and rowans cover a municipality that looks out over the Cernadilla reservoir, where water sports are practised, and through which deer, wild boar and Iberian wolves move.
The first true wine of Sanabria
Food and drink
In this municipal district the first wine made entirely in Sanabria is produced and marketed, a mountain comarca that until a few years ago did not figure on the wine map of the province of Zamora.
The Carmen festival of Asturianos
Activity
The village celebrates its patronal festival on the weekend following 16 July, the day of the Carmen, whose image is kept in the modern hermitage with Baroque altarpieces; in autumn it is the prize-winning boletus that draws visitors.
