What to see and do in Mombuey

Mombuey
Village
Mombuey is a town in the comarca of La Carballeda, in the province of Zamora, with 395 inhabitants, situated by the valley of the Tera river, today partly occupied by the Valparaíso reservoir, on the Way of St James. Its mountains, between 790 and 1,030 metres in altitude, are home to varied wildlife, with deer, roe deer, wild boar and even the occasional wolf, as well as numerous birds of prey such as the golden eagle, the peregrine falcon and the eagle owl. Its church of la Asunción has been a monument since 1931 for its tower, a late Romanesque watchtower of greenish ashlar attributed to the Knights Templar of the second half of the 13th century.
The Templar tower of Mombuey
Monument
Raised at the end of the thirteenth century in late Romanesque with greenish grey stone, it measures 2.5 by 4 metres in plan, distributes three floors joined by wooden stairs and is topped by a spire of convex planes.
The ox carved on the tower
Curiosity
Among the reliefs of disputed meaning that decorate the tower stands out the bust of an ox framed in a border, an image from which local tradition derives the very name of the village.
The oak and chestnut hills
Nature
Around the village follow one another oak woods of carballo, chestnut trees, walnut trees and pine woods where red deer, roe deer, wild boar and wolves live, and over which the common kestrel and the golden eagle fly.
The fair of San Martino
Activity
The November fair, of medieval root, still brings together every year the villages of the Carballeda in Mombuey and functions as the livestock and commercial occasion of the comarca before the coming of winter.
The donation of Monte Boe
Historical milestone
In 1161 the place called Monte Boe was donated to the monastery of San Martín de Castañeda; the place name already appeared as Monte ad Boviam in Visigothic ecclesiastical records of the middle of the sixth century.
The empanada of Mombuey
Food and drink
The empanada is the mouthful that identifies this villa within the recipe book of the Carballeda, alongside octopus boiled in a copper cauldron and the game stews provided by the red deer and wild boar of the sierra.
