What to see and do in Manzanal de los Infantes

Manzanal de los Infantes
Village
Manzanal de los Infantes is a municipality in the comarca of La Carballeda, in the province of Zamora, of about 64 square kilometres, which, besides the eponymous settlement, brings together those of Donadillo, Dornillas, Lanseros, Otero de Centenos and Sejas de Sanabria, incorporated through mergers between the mid-19th century and 1959. In the Middle Ages it was part of the Kingdom of León, whose monarchs resettled western Zamora; in the early modern period it belonged to the Lands of the Count of Benavente, within the Sanabria receivership. With the creation of the present-day provinces in 1833 it passed to the province of Zamora, within the Leonese Region, joining the judicial district of Puebla de Sanabria in 1834. In the mid-19th century it had 120 inhabitants; today it has 133.
The church of San Antolín in Otero de Centenos
Monument
The church of Otero de Centenos, the largest of the six hamlets of the municipality with thirty-eight residents, is the most visible piece of a heritage completed by the church of San Miguel and the hermitage of the Santo Cristo.
The mergers of Lanseros and Otero de Centenos
Historical milestone
The municipality absorbed Lanseros in 1953 and Otero de Centenos in 1959, after having added around 1850 Donadillo, Dornillas and Sejas de Sanabria; its six villages today gather one hundred and thirty-three residents.
Dornillas, four residents
Curiosity
The smallest of the six settlements of the municipality had in 2024 four registered inhabitants, a figure that illustrates the emptying of the Carballeda: the whole municipal district barely exceeds two inhabitants per square kilometre.
