What to see and do in Espadañedo

Espadañedo
Village
Espadañedo is a municipality in the comarca of La Carballeda, in the province of Zamora, with 109 inhabitants distributed across six hamlets — Carbajales de la Encomienda, Espadañedo, Faramontanos de la Sierra, Letrillas, Utrera de la Encomienda and Vega del Castillo — surrounded by the oak forest that gives the comarca its name. The capital, with a town centre of volcanic stone and slate roofs, had 144 inhabitants in the mid-19th century; around 1850 the municipality reached its present extent by incorporating the rest of the hamlets. It retains the parish church of Santa Justa and the hermitages of la Soledad and San Marcos. Within its municipal area are the Carbonal dolmen, the hillfort of La Cigarrosa and Los Corralones, a hillfort and Roman gold mine brought to light by Ángel Esparza.
The dolmen of El Carbonal
Nature
The megalithic tomb of El Carbonal proves the human occupation of the municipal district since prehistory and is, with the castro of La Cigarrosa, the oldest archaeological landmark of this corner of the Carballeda.
The church of Santa Justa
Monument
The parish church, with the hermitages of La Soledad and San Marcos, the forge and the fountain, forms the ensemble of traditional architecture of a municipality spread across six hamlets and with 1.41 inhabitants per square kilometre.
The Roman gold mine of Los Corralones
Curiosity
Rome worked the gold of this spot in the municipal district, a vestige of the gold mining of the north-west of the peninsula that here lives alongside the castro of La Cigarrosa and the dolmen of El Carbonal in a municipality of one hundred and nine residents.
The goat cheeses of the sierra
Food and drink
Goat cheeses are, with chestnuts, the recognised reference of the larder of Sanabria and the Carballeda; in hamlets such as Carbajales or Utrera de la Encomienda small livestock sustained the economy for centuries.
