What to see and do in Peque

Peque
Village
Peque is a hamlet in the comarca of La Carballeda, in the province of Zamora, situated at 850 metres above sea level and 90 kilometres north-west of the provincial capital. It has 111 inhabitants and its land, watered by the Ribera and Negro rivers, is rich in springs, fountains, wetlands, streams and lagoons, which explains the blue of its coat of arms; its residents have traditionally lived off agriculture and livestock farming. In its town centre stand a parish church and a Renaissance hermitage, both showing a notable contrast between the yellowish stone of their walls and the dark slate of their roofs. Within its municipal area, between Peque and Otero de Centenos, an Iron Age hillfort is preserved, once inhabited by the Astures, evidence of settlement predating the Roman conquest.
The church of the Holy Trinity
Monument
A Renaissance church of three naves raised over Romanesque remains of the twelfth century and topped with a Baroque altarpiece; it is the main building of a village that in 2025 did not go beyond one hundred and eleven residents.
The Oterino bridge
Monument
A bridge of Romanesque fabric preserved on the outskirts of the built-up area, evidence of the old roads of the municipal district alongside the three flour mills — El Fresno, El Quemado and La Riberina — that the local waters drove.
The fishing reserve of the Ribera river
Nature
The Ribera crosses the municipal district with a fishing reserve and a trout farm; in the pine, oak and chestnut woods that surround it there are wolves, wild boar, red deer, foxes, hares and partridges.
The festivities of the Virgen de la Consolación
Activity
On the fourth Sunday of September the patroness is celebrated with a nine-day novena, two masses with a procession and open-air dances from Friday to Sunday, enlivened by the Colino pipers and their popular rounds.
The Sanabria-style trout
Food and drink
The trout that the river Ribera gives are prepared in the Sanabria manner, a recipe the village shares with those of the Tera; the fishing reserve and the trout farm of the municipal district have sustained this tradition for decades.
