What to see and do in Palacios de Sanabria

Palacios de Sanabria
Village
Palacios de Sanabria is a village of 233 inhabitants, at 971 metres, in the Sanabria district, which also comprises the settlements of Otero de Sanabria, Remesal and Vime de Sanabria; its residents are known by the demonym arguselos. Repopulated in the Middle Ages by the kings of León, it suffered, after Portugal's independence in 1143, the border conflicts between the two kingdoms, which stabilised in the early thirteenth century; in the nineteenth century it passed to the province of Zamora, and between 1840 and 1860 it expanded its municipal area by incorporating Vime de Sanabria and Remesal, joined in 1965 by Otero de Sanabria. It preserves the hermitage of the Santo Cristo, with three naves and a baroque altarpiece, and dovecotes that, unlike those of Tierra de Campos, are built of dark rubble masonry and roofed with slate slabs.
The hermitage of the Santo Cristo of Palacios
Monument
Situated in the upper part of the village, it has three naves and a Baroque altarpiece presided over by a Crucified Christ; the parish church completes the ensemble with its bell tower and an altarpiece of Neoclassical design.
The slate dovecotes
Curiosity
Unlike the mud dovecotes of Tierra de Campos, those of Palacios are raised in dark stone and roofed with slate slabs, adapting a building type from the meseta to the Sanabria mountains.
The Alistano-Sanabresa veal
Food and drink
The cows of the Alistano-Sanabresa breed that graze in these valleys give the meat protected since 1996 by the protected geographical indication Ternera de Aliste, which covers the comarcas of Aliste, Sayago and Sanabria.
