Arcos de la Polvorosa
Village
Arcos de la Polvorosa is a village in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, in the province of Zamora, south of the confluence of the Órbigo and Esla rivers, on a territory of just over twelve square kilometres; it has 211 inhabitants, compared with the 148 recorded in the mid-19th century. The victory in the year 878 of the Asturian-Leonese armies of Alfonso III at the battle of la Polvorosa, near the town, was decisive for its integration into the Kingdom of León. From that medieval period dates the old bridge known as Deustamben, which brought fame to the village and of which today only the remains of the foundations survive in the bed of the Esla. After belonging to the Lands of the Count of Benavente, it passed in 1833 to the province of Zamora; today it falls under the Valles de Benavente wine geographical indication.
