What to see and do in Villanueva de Azoague

Villanueva de Azoague
Village
Villanueva de Azoague is a municipality of 398 inhabitants, which includes the town of Castropepe, in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, province of Zamora. Its name comes from the Arabic aswāq, «markets». Repopulated in the Middle Ages after Alfonso III's victory at the Battle of la Polvorosa in the year 878, the former municipality of Castropepe was merged into that of Villanueva de Azoague around 1850. The village sits in the valley where the Órbigo and Esla rivers meet, in an area with numerous irrigation canals. Its church of la Asunción stands out for its coffered ceiling and choir, and within the grounds of the old sugar factory, the Casa del Administrador now houses the Sugar Museum. Its festivals are San Gregorio, on 9 May, and la Virgen de la Asunción, on 15 August.
