Santa Colomba de las Monjas
Village
Santa Colomba de las Monjas is a village of 236 inhabitants in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, in the province of Zamora. Its name recalls the convent of nuns that occupied it between the 12th and 16th centuries. Integrated in the early modern period into the lands of the Count of Benavente, it had 148 inhabitants in the mid-19th century. Its parish church, whose tower combines rubblework and ashlar, holds a Cistercian coffered ceiling above the high altar; nearby stands the Piedra del Rollo, a cylindrical rock that tradition links to an old gallows. Two-hundred-year-old ash trees grow in the municipal area. The village celebrates San Antonio de Padua on 14 June and its patron saint, Santa Colomba, on 17 September.
