Milles de la Polvorosa
Village
Milles de la Polvorosa is a village of 206 inhabitants in the Zamora comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, at the confluence of the Tera and Esla rivers, next to an old Roman road. Its name may come from the Latin «gemellus» (twin), since the village sits at the foot of two hills of identical height, El Sierro and El Montico, separated by a narrow valley. Its church of San Miguel Arcángel, Herrerian in style and dating from around 1673, stands out for its dome and altarpieces. On the neighbouring hill, shared with Mózar, stood the castro of La Magdalena or Socastro, occupied from Celtiberian times until the 16th century. In 1985 a granite Roman milestone from the time of Nero was found in the El Priorato area; it is now kept in the Museum of Zamora.
