Burganes de Valverde
Village
Burganes de Valverde is a municipality of 593 inhabitants on the banks of the river Tera, in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, with the hamlet of Olmillos de Valverde attached to it. On the river terraces of Las Jaricas and Los Trigales, hand-axes, scrapers and Levallois-technique points from the Palaeolithic have been documented, along with polished Bronze Age axes that residents popularly call chispas or piedras de rayo. The present-day settlement was founded during the Leonese resettlement of the early Middle Ages, although the first written references date from the 10th century. Its church, dedicated to the Saviour, displays a slender bell-gable whose dome was restored in the 18th century after the Lisbon earthquake; a remodelling in the 1960s removed its Mudéjar portal and replaced the Arab-tile roof with slate.
