What to see and do in Santa María de Valverde

Santa María de Valverde
Village
Santa María de Valverde is a hamlet of 50 inhabitants in Zamora province, on the banks of the Castrón river, within the Valle de Valverde. The village, under its current name, already existed in the 10th century, the result of the resettlement carried out by Alfonso III of Asturias with Mozarabs and a small contingent of Jews who had arrived from Al-Ándalus, after the decisive Battle of la Polvoraria. A deed of donation to the monastery of Santa Marta de Tera survives, dated 22 February 1028, by which a Mozarab couple, Abzuleman, known as Fuertes, and his wife Albella, ceded a property inherited from their ancestors in the village. It later belonged to the Lands of the Count of Benavente, within the Merindad de Valverde, and by the mid-19th century had 146 inhabitants.
The Gothic Christ of Valverde
Monument
The church of the Asunción holds a notable Gothic crucifix, with the head tilted, the legs crossed and a long cloth hanging from the arms, in a village that in 2025 had fifty inhabitants.
From the monastery to the council of Benavente
Historical milestone
In 1433 the place passed from monastic domain to the council of Benavente; a donation document of 1028 already mentioned it and the fueros of 1107 and 1170 had granted privileges to the residents of the valley.
