What to see and do in Villanueva de las Peras

Villanueva de las Peras
Village
Villanueva de las Peras is a village of 85 inhabitants in the Valverde valley, comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, situated on the banks of the Castrón river and crossed by the Camino Sanabrés of the Vía de la Plata. Founded in the Middle Ages as part of the repopulation process of the Kingdom of León, it had 162 inhabitants in the mid-19th century. In July 2022 the wildfire in the sierra de la Culebra forced the village to be evacuated; today only a bar and a hostel remain, after its last restaurant closed in 2023. Its monumental church of la Asunción stands out for its bell-gable and the large arch that supports the staircase leading up to the belfry; inside it holds a Neoclassical altarpiece with an image of la Asunción surrounded by little angels.
