Melgar de Tera
Village
Melgar de Tera is a village in the province of Zamora, in Castile and León, which together with Pumarejo de Tera has 331 inhabitants over a municipal area of 40.91 km²; its name combines «melgar», land abundant in wild alfalfa (mielga), with the name of the Tera river. In the 1st century it was an important pottery centre: in the area known as Los Ladrillos, 2 kilometres from the village, archaeologists have located the workshop that supplied thin-walled vessels to the Roman camp of Petavonium and whose production reached as far as the Astures' castros in the Navia valley. In the early modern period it belonged to the lands of the Count of Benavente, within whose judicial district it has remained since 1834. The village church, dedicated to San Pedro and San Pablo, was built with stones from the old church of San Blas de Melgar, today the site of the cemetery.
