Santa Croya de Tera
Village
Santa Croya de Tera is a village of 253 inhabitants in the province of Zamora, in Castile and León, situated on the banks of the Tera river, from which it takes the second part of its name. Local tradition attributes its origin to shepherds from Santa Marta de Tera who, to avoid travelling daily with their flocks, settled next to a convent then called Sainte Croix. In the Middle Ages the territory was integrated into the Kingdom of León and belonged to the Merindad de Riba de Tera. Its church, dedicated to Santo Tomás Apóstol, holds a 16th-century Gothic baptismal font and a 15th-century image of Santa María; at the festival of San Cayetano, the young women sing him a hymn asking for rain.
