Navianos de Valverde
Village
Navianos de Valverde is a village of 157 inhabitants in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, in Zamora, whose name recalls, according to tradition, the medieval repopulation by people from the Asturian council of Navia. Its municipal area, of 14.12 km², is watered by the Tera river —which rises in the sierra de Vigo, above Lake Sanabria— and by the Castrón stream, amid holm-oak woods, riverside vegetation and irrigated crops of sugar beet and maize that coexist with small game such as hares, partridges and rabbits. Integrated into the Kingdom of León in the Middle Ages, it later formed part of the lands of the Count of Benavente, before passing to the province of Zamora in 1833. Its brotherhood of the Virgen del Carmen, founded in the 18th century, today brings together more than six hundred people.
