Friera de Valverde
Village
Friera de Valverde is a hamlet in Zamora of 121 inhabitants, situated in the Valle de Valverde, comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, very close to the sierra de las Cavernas. In the year 878 the victory of the armies of Alfonso III at the battle of la Polvorosa, fought in its vicinity, was decisive for the resettlement and integration of the town into the Kingdom of León; later it formed part of the Lands of the Count of Benavente, within the Merindad de Valverde, until in 1833 it passed to the province of Zamora. By the mid-19th century it still had 221 inhabitants. Its church, under the invocation of Saint John the Evangelist, patron of the village, stands out for its stone bell-gable and for rising on a small meadow; in his honour the patronal festivities are celebrated on 27 December.
