Villanázar
Village
Villanázar is a municipality in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, in the province of Zamora, with 256 inhabitants, which includes Mózar de Valverde and Vecilla de Trasmonte. It lies in the valley of the Tera river, between 690 and 779 metres above sea level, and the village stands next to the Almucera stream, at about 710 metres. It belonged to the Merindad de Valverde, within the lands of the Count of Benavente, until the provincial reform of 1833; around 1850 it took on its present form by adding the hamlets of Mózar and Vecilla de Trasmonte. Tradition derives its name from Villa Nazareth, in memory of its settlers after the expulsion of the Arabs. It retains the church of San Martín and celebrates its festivals in honour of San Antonio de Padua, on 13 June, and San Martín de Tours, on 11 November.
