Quiruelas de Vidriales
Village
Quiruelas de Vidriales is a municipality of 615 inhabitants in the comarca of Benavente y los Valles, in the province of Zamora, situated at 720 metres above sea level and also made up of the hamlet of Colinas de Transmonte. It is characterised by the large number of wine cellars dug into its clay soil and by its vineyards; every 31 October the young conscripts (quintos) have dinner in the cellar and come out with the zumbos tied to the oxen. Its patron saint is the Virgen de la Asunción, and it also celebrates the festivals of la Bendición de Campos on 6 May and La Novena on 24 May. The place name comes from the quiruela or quiruelo, a pink-flowered heather much prized by bees. In the Middle Ages it formed part of the Kingdom of León, and in the early modern period it belonged to the lands of the Count of Benavente, within the Merindad de Vidriales.
