Matilla de Arzón
Village
Matilla de Arzón is a town of 150 inhabitants in the north-east of Zamora, in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, 15 kilometres from Benavente; its houses lie hidden behind a rise that shelters it from the páramo winds. It has been documented since 15 May 951, when King Ordoño III of León granted the monastery of Sahagún the villages of Matilla and Magretes, near the river Esla; in 1335 Alfonso XI confirmed the exemption from the Benavente toll enjoyed by its residents. The depopulation of the 1970s and 1980s reduced it from more than 700 inhabitants to fewer than 200. It preserves its medieval rollo, featured on the municipal coat of arms of 2022, the Renaissance church of the Saviour and the chapel of the Vera Cruz, between two water tanks.
