What to see and do in Villaquejida

Villaquejida
Village
Villaquejida is a town in the comarca of the Vega de Toral, in the province of León, situated in the floodplain of the río Esla, the ancient Astura, the main Leonese tributary of the Duero, 57 kilometres from the capital; it has about 760 inhabitants. Since remote times artificial channels have been opened to irrigate the floodplain, among them the 19th-century Esla canal. North of the village, in a holm-oak grove, wine cellars dug with a pick are preserved. The church of Santa María de las Eras holds the image of the Santo Cristo, a work from the early 16th century, celebrated on 14 September.

Pilgrimage of el Voto de la Villa
Activity
Every 8 May the villagers fulfil an old vow by walking to the hermitage of the Virgen de la Vega, in neighbouring Cimanes, a pilgrimage they share with other places of the lower Esla and which opens the spring festive cycle.
