What to see and do in San Adrián del Valle

San Adrián del Valle
Village
San Adrián del Valle is a hamlet of 82 inhabitants in the León páramo, whose name alludes to a small monastery documented between the 10th and 12th centuries near the present-day settlement. Situated beside the Reguero Grande del Valle stream, also called Ahogaborricos, a tributary of the Órbigo, it suffered a depopulation between 1950 and 1986 that reduced its residents by more than half, coinciding with the abandonment of vine growing. From that winegrowing past more than six hundred underground cellars remain, among them the Bodega de Doña Rosa, dug in 1918 and covering about 6,000 square metres, the largest of its kind in Spain; the municipal coat of arms itself, approved in 2019, includes a silver barrel alongside two caves representing the cellars.
Parish church of San Adrián
Monument
A stone church of a single nave, with a collar-beam roof truss and a 17th-century altarpiece. Lightning brought down its bellcote, rebuilt between 1748 and 1749 by the master builder Gervasio Jolías, in work that ended in litigation.
Ahogaborricos Stream
Nature
The Reguero Grande del Valle, known by that name among local people, is a tributary of the Órbigo and passes beside the village at 779 metres of altitude, at the point where the plain of the valley begins to rise towards the moorland.
Doña Rosa's wine cellar
Curiosity
The village has a vast area of cellars once used to make wine for trade and for the household. Among them is the one known as Doña Rosa's, held to be one of the largest in Europe, with its adjoining distillery.
