What to see and do in Ayoó de Vidriales

Ayoó de Vidriales
Village
Ayoó de Vidriales is a municipality in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, in the province of Zamora, with 264 inhabitants, at 840 metres above sea level, which brings together the settlements of Ayoó, Carracedo de Vidriales and Congosta; its residents are known as ayoínos. The village grew up around a monastery, called Agio or Ageo, already in existence by the end of the 9th century, which in 1154 Alfonso VII of León handed over to the Order of Saint Benedict and which later, in the 12th century, came under the Order of the Temple until its dissolution in the early 14th century. From 1504 until the 19th century it was under the control of the Marquis of Alcañices. It preserves a late Gothic fortified tower and the Church of the Saviour, set apart from the hamlet, with a bell-gable beneath whose pointed arch a street passes.
