Fuente Encalada
Village
Fuente Encalada is a hamlet of 92 inhabitants in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, in the province of Zamora, which grew up near the Roman city of Petavonium, where the remains of a necropolis have been found. In the Middle Ages it became part of the Kingdom of León and, later, of the Lands of the Count of Benavente; by the mid-19th century it had 180 inhabitants. Its church displays a Renaissance porch whose columns, with capitals, support a Moorish-style timber roof; a file has been opened for its declaration as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). Inside it holds the main altarpiece, the work of Bartolomé Hernández, a pupil of Gaspar Becerra. It celebrates the festivities of the Virgin of la Encalada in the first week of August, and keeps up the tradition of the setting up of the maypole.
