What to see and do in Castrocalbón

Castrocalbón
Village
Castrocalbón, Castrucarbón in the Asturian-Leonese of La Valdería, is a municipality in the comarca of La Bañeza, in the province of León, with about 900 inhabitants divided between the eponymous town and the hamlets of Calzada, Felechares and San Félix de la Valdería. It stretches over the fertile vegas of the río Eria, among alluvial terraces and scrubland of holm oak and oak. Settlement goes back to the Lower Palaeolithic, and in the Early Iron Age the hillforts that give the comarca its name proliferated; through its territory passed the Roman road that linked Astorga and Braga, guarded by the Cohors IV Gallorum. It preserves the fuero granted by Alfonso VII in 1156, with twenty-six articles.
Palace-house and castle of Castrocalbón
Monument
On the plateau of El Palacio a castro (fortified Iron Age settlement) of the Second Iron Age, a medieval fortress with moat and cistern from the mid-12th century and a palace of around 1400 are superimposed. It was declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) on 22 April 1949.
Church of El Salvador de Castrocalbón
Monument
At the foot of the Palacio plateau, already on the flood plain. Gómez-Moreno described its east end as Moorish brickwork and its naves as a later, rough fabric of the 13th century, and the church is in good condition.
Bridge of hierro sobre el Eria
Monument
Built around the 1920s, its narrowness made it necessary to build another crossing a short distance away. It has been kept for its historical value and has become one of the images by which the town is identified.
Floodplains of the Eria River
Nature
The Eria waters fertile, tree-lined flood plains between arid alluvial terraces and hills patched with holm oak, oak and steppe scrub. The municipality receives some 477 millimetres of rain a year and its average temperature is around 11.7 degrees.
Palaeolithic tools of the Eria terraces
Historical milestone
The highest alluvial terraces of the Eria valley, in Castrocalbón, have yielded stone tools between two hundred thousand and three hundred thousand years old, today distributed among the Museo Provincial de León, the University of León, and the local museum.
