What to see and do in Santibáñez de Vidriales

Santibáñez de Vidriales
Village
Santibáñez de Vidriales is a municipality in the province of Zamora, in Castile and León, that brings together eight villages —among them Bercianos, Moratones, Rosinos and Villaobispo— and has a total of 846 inhabitants. Its name refers to the patron saint of the parish church, San Juan. Next to Rosinos de Vidriales stand the ruins of the Roman camp of Petavonium, where, in the late 1st century BC, the Legio X Gemina was stationed, since the Vidriales valley was a strategic enclave for controlling the wars against the Astures and Cantabri; today an interpretation centre explains the site. In the Early Modern period the municipality belonged to the Lands of the Count of Benavente, within whose judicial district it has remained since 1834. The surrounding area, rich in holm oaks and chestnut trees, is home to deer, wild boar and birds.
