Cubo de Benavente
Village
Cubo de Benavente is a village of 115 inhabitants at the northern edge of Zamora, in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles. Part of the Kingdom of León during the Middle Ages, in the early modern period it belonged to the Lands of the Count of Benavente, and by the mid-19th century the hamlet had 416 inhabitants. Despite its small size today, it maintains commercial activity, with grocery shops, a pharmacy, specialised sales of goat's cheese, and construction and rural-tourism businesses, as well as pig and goat farms that have replaced the old flocks that once grazed at La Dehesa. Its main heritage consists of the underground wine cellars dug into the slopes of the hill bordering Congosta, the legacy of a traditional wine-growing craft, next to the church and the chapel.
