San Pedro de Ceque
Village
San Pedro de Ceque is a village of 417 inhabitants in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, in the province of Zamora. In the Middle Ages, the knight Ponce Giraldo de Cabrera received the town as a reward from King Alfonso VII of León, and in the early modern period it was integrated into the lands of the Count of Benavente. Its economy has been linked to the cultivation of the vine, as recalled by the numerous underground wine cellars dug in the village, in addition to rain-fed cereal and market-garden produce. In its holm-oak and oak woodlands, such as El Pernacio, trees with thousand-year-old trunks grow. The parish church holds a Byzantine Christ and several Romanesque capitals. Local folklore remains alive thanks to the group La Trasga, which enlivens the patronal festivals with traditional music and dances.
