What to see and do in Pozoantiguo

Pozoantiguo
Village
Pozoantiguo is a village in Zamora province, in Castile and León, with 188 inhabitants (INE 2025), set on a Pliocene patch of rañas (weathered gravel terrain) whose water table explains the abundance of springs and the place name itself, already documented as Poçatigo or Poço antiguo, from the Latin puteus antiquus. The place was resettled by the kings of León after the Reconquista, and in 1159 Count Osorio and his wife Teresa donated it to the diocese of Zamora. Its most distinctive building is the Escuelas (schools), opened in 1917 thanks to senator Ismael Calvo Madroño, who was born in the village, while the church of El Salvador is an 18th-century work by the Toro-born architect Francisco Díez.
The schools of Francisco Ferriol
Monument
The school building designed by the architect Francisco Ferriol cost 96,291.57 pesetas and was inaugurated on 25 July 1917; today it houses the village's leisure centre for the elderly.
The maypole and ribbon races of Adalia
Activity
On 1 May the maypole pine is planted and the ribbon races are run on horseback at the festival of Adalia; on 17 January it is San Antón, the festival of the young men, and on 1 March the confraternity of the Angel processes.
The Trillao and Lebrero hillocks
Nature
Two erosion-resistant tesos, the Trillao and the Lebrero, command a municipal district of between 710 and 715 metres crossed by the Adalia stream, with pines, almond trees and vines where rabbits, hares, partridges and wild boar live.
