What to see and do in Villardondiego

Villardondiego
Village
Villardondiego, with 110 inhabitants, takes the first part of its name from the Latin villaris, 'small village', while the 'Don Diego' would recall the noble who carried out its medieval refounding, as part of the resettlement of the Alfoz de Toro by the Leonese monarchy. From the Leonese Cortes of 1188 onward it was represented by the city of Toro, whose province it belonged to until the 1833 provincial division placed it within Zamora, in the Leonese Region; by the mid-19th century it had 667 inhabitants, far more than today. The Renaissance church, with three naves, holds a life-size 14th-century crucifix and two 16th-century panels from a former hermitage, while on a hill overlooking the landscape stands the hermitage of Gracia.
The monstrance of the Nativity
Monument
The parish church of the Natividad de Nuestra Señora, Renaissance of the end of the sixteenth and beginning of the seventeenth century with a round vault and square pilasters, holds a monstrance of great value and a fourteenth-century crucifix.
The pilgrimage of the Virgen de Gracia
Activity
On a hill that commands the municipal district stands the hermitage of Gracia, with the Virgin in an eighteenth-century Baroque niche altarpiece; its pilgrimage festival, formerly at Pentecost, is held today in the month of August.
