What to see and do in Abezames

Abezames
Village
Abezames is a hamlet in Zamora province, in the Alfoz de Toro, 12 kilometres from Toro and 44 from the provincial capital, in a flat cereal-growing landscape watered by the Adalia stream, a tributary of the Duero. Two kilometres away is the Montpodre hillfort, with Celtiberian pottery from the Cogotas I culture of the Iron Age. In the 10th century it was occupied, together with Vezdemarbán and Benegiles, during the resettlement carried out by Ramiro II of León, and remained linked to Toro, which represented it at the Cortes of León in 1188. In the 15th century the archives of the monastery of Sancti Spiritus in Toro mention a fortress, dated to 1420, of which only the ruins of the old church of San Salvador remain. Its church of San Miguel Arcángel, built of stone in the 16th century, holds a baroque altarpiece that Pedro Roldán completed in 1734. It now has 58 inhabitants.
