What to see and do in Pinilla de Toro

Pinilla de Toro
Village
Pinilla de Toro is a village in the Alfoz de Toro, in the east of Zamora province, with 24.27 square kilometres and 186 inhabitants, far below the 1,011 it had in the mid-19th century. The sites of Los Villares and El Puentón show that Bronze Age settlements once stood here, and after the passage of Romans and Visigoths, who called the region Campi gothorum, it was resettled by the Leonese kings; medieval documents refer to it as Piniella in the 10th century and Penilla in the 12th, and it received a fuero (charter) in 1147. Its church of San Esteban, known as El Cabildo, stands outside the town centre with a coffered (artesonado) nave, a tower with a spiral staircase, and five altars. It lives on cereal farming and cattle raising, with a cheese factory and a wood-fired bakery.

Monument

The Cabildo and its spiral staircase
Curiosity
The church of San Esteban, called El Cabildo, has a porch on the south side and a chapel of the Santo Cristo de la Vera Cruz; its single nave is roofed with a barrel vault and the tower hides a spiral staircase.
