Aldeamayor de San Martín
Village
Aldeamayor de San Martín is a municipality of about 6,300 inhabitants in the Tierra de Pinares district, in the province of Valladolid, at 706 metres above sea level and 19 km from the capital, in the former Raso de Portillo, territory ruled in the Middle Ages from Portillo by the Counts of Benavente. It arose in the 14th century from the grouping of seven feudal villages dependent on Portillo, Aldeamayor being the largest, from which it took its name; Charles III granted it the title of town. Its church of San Martín de Tours, with two naves, was built with stone from the quarries of the Cuéllar area between the late 15th century, when the chancel and the chapel of Santa Catalina, founded in 1496, were built, and the 17th century.
