Aldea de San Miguel
Village
Aldea de San Miguel is a municipality in Valladolid, with about 210 inhabitants, between the roads from Valladolid to Madrid and to Segovia, near Portillo. In the mid-19th century, according to Pascual Madoz, it had 104 two-storey houses around a square and six streets, a hospital for the poor and travellers, and an economy based on vineyards, pasture, chickpeas, potatoes and hemp, with two bakeries and a spirits distillery. Its church, dedicated to San Miguel Arcángel, preserves a Mudéjar apse with blind arcading and a 16th-century tower designed by Alonso de Tolosa and built by Pedro López de Aguilar. Beside the church stands a Gothic wayside cross (crucero) from the early 16th century on circular steps, with a capital carved with angels; to the north, on the way to La Pedraja, stands the humilladero of San Roque.
