What to see and do in Portillo

Portillo
Village
Portillo is a town in the Valladolid part of the Tierra de Pinares, with about 2,400 inhabitants, made up of two districts: Portillo, atop a hill, and Arrabal, at its foot, which preserves part of the 13th-century stone wall with its entrance gate, the “Arco grande”. The 15th-century castle, a Monumento Nacional (a former top Spanish heritage-protection designation, predecessor of today's Bien de Interés Cultural) since 1931, is remembered more for illustrious prisoners, such as Álvaro de Luna, than for acts of war; from the nearby “mirador de Portillo” one can look out over the sea of pine forests in the Duero valley. Of the seven churches it once had, three survive, among them Santa María, from the 16th century, with a Pietà from the school of Juan de Juni. Its cross-country bull runs (encierros) are among the oldest in Spain.
