What to see and do in La Pedraja de Portillo

La Pedraja de Portillo
Village
La Pedraja de Portillo grew out of the shepherds' camps that came down from the heights of Portillo with their sheep to graze in the extensive wastelands and pine forests of the Raso de Portillo, a wetland that, before being drained in the 19th century, covered 1,900 hectares. It belonged to the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Portillo, made up of four sexmos and eighteen hamlets, of which only six municipalities survive today, among them Aldeamayor de San Martín and La Pedraja itself. Set at 722 metres above sea level beside the River Cega, its land is divided between dry cereal farming and irrigated beet, carrot and sunflower crops. The village, with about 1,180 inhabitants, recalls its past with monuments to the artesian well and to its mills, and celebrates the feast of El Remate in December.
