Villanueva de los Caballeros
Village
Villanueva de los Caballeros is a municipality of 147 inhabitants in Tierra de Campos, Valladolid, 56 kilometres from the capital, crossed by the río Sequillo. El Miradero has been excavated there, a collective tomb from the final Neolithic with bone spatulas and vessels associated with the use of consciousness-altering substances; Iron Age pottery and a bronze coin of the emperor Gallienus minted in Trier have also been found. In the 11th century the village appears documented as Villa Nova de Campo de Tauro, founded next to a smaller hamlet, Villa Albín, today called el Convento. In the mid-19th century it had 770 inhabitants. It preserves the baroque church of San Pedro Apóstol and a fountain designed in 1572 by the stonemason Juan de Nates.
