Villagarcía de Campos
Village
Villagarcía de Campos is a municipality of around 300 inhabitants on the banks of the río Sequillo, next to the montes Torozos, in the Tierra de Campos comarca, in the province of Valladolid. Since 1387 its castle-palace belonged, by royal grant of John I of Castile, to the Quijada family, whose last representative was Luis Méndez de Quijada, steward of Charles V. Next to the castle stands the collegiate church of San Luis, whose original design by Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón was modified in 1572 by the Cantabrian master Juan de Nates; the adjoining college and novitiate were founded by Magdalena de Ulloa, widow of Luis de Quijada and known as "God's almswoman." Traditions such as the ribbon race on horseback and, at Easter, the procession of the Ecce Homo are still kept.
