Villavellid
Village
Villavellid is a hamlet of the province of Valladolid with around fifty residents, located between Villardefrades and Tiedra, in the Tierra de Campos comarca, dominated by a 15th-century castle-palace with a square plan, raised on the boundary line of the kingdoms of León and Castile, with three cylindrical towers and a keep now in stabilised ruin; in the 15th century it belonged to the Almanza family and later to the marquises of Alcañices. Its church of Santa María holds a baroque sculptural group of the Virgin and Child with Santa Ana, attributed to the Toro-based sculptors Sebastián Ducete and Esteban de Rueda and considered one of the most singular works of Castilian baroque sculpture. It also preserves, in ruins, the Renaissance church of San Miguel, with a plateresque doorway, included on the Lista Roja del Patrimonio (a heritage-at-risk registry maintained by the Spanish NGO Hispania Nostra).
