Urueña
Village
Urueña is a walled town of about 200 inhabitants in Valladolid, on a hill at the foot of the Montes Torozos, with one of the best-preserved historic centres in the province and the look of a small medieval city. It was declared a conjunto histórico-artístico in 1975 (a former Spanish heritage-protection designation, precursor of today's Bien de Interés Cultural), a distinction that includes its hermitage of la Anunciada, one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture on the Castilian meseta. It preserves much of its wall with two of its gates, stretches of the castle, large stone houses and the Gothic-Renaissance church of Santa María del Azogue. It houses the Joaquín Díaz ethnographic centre and the Museum of Bells. Since 2007 it has been Spain's first Book Town, and since 2014 it has been listed among Spain's most beautiful villages. Outside the centre, the traditional dovecotes stand out.
