Cotanes del Monte
Village
Cotanes del Monte is a hamlet in the province of Zamora, in Tierra de Campos, whose name means 'boundary or end of the hill', referring to the Monte Raso de Villalpando and, it is believed, to the eastern boundary the Kingdom of León had there. Its 12th-century Romanesque church of San Pedro was built by the lord of Campo de Toro to give it to the bishop of León in 1073, and Father Isla mentioned in Fray Gerundio a 'famous archive of Cotanes' of which no trace remains today. In the 12th century a fortress is also documented, part of the network of fortified towns of Ferdinand II of León facing Castile. In the 15th century it was left almost deserted, reduced to seven residents for lack of water, until from 1537 two wells were opened that allowed its resettlement. Today it has 79 inhabitants.
