Villafrades de Campos
Village
Villafrades de Campos is a municipality of 59 inhabitants in the Tierra de Campos of Valladolid, next to the arroyo Berruéz, near its confluence with the río Sequillo. It was called Ecclesias Albas and later Grijas-Albas, until the Benedictines of the monastery of San Benito de Sahagún, who repopulated it in 921, gave it the Latin name Villa fratrum, 'village of the friars'. In 945 Ramiro II granted the town to the monastery, making it an ecclesiastical lordship, a status it kept until the 19th century except for a brief attempt at alienation by Philip II in 1582, revoked after the monks' complaints. It preserves the church of San Juan Evangelista, from the 16th century, and celebrates its festivals on 16 August, San Roque, and on the second-to-last Sunday in honour of the Virgen de Grijas-Albas.
