Villalón de Campos
Village
Villalón de Campos is a town in the province of Valladolid (Castile and León), in the Tierra de Campos comarca, bordering Palencia and located on the Way of St. James from Madrid. Between the 15th and 17th centuries it was a jurisdictional lordship of the Pimentel family, counts of Benavente and later counts of Villalón, and during that same period it hosted an important livestock fair under its patronage. With around 1,475 inhabitants, far from the more than 4,600 it had in the mid-19th century before the agrarian crisis and emigration, it preserves its 16th-century Gothic rollo (a medieval jurisdictional column), declared a Monumento Nacional (Spain's former designation for a nationally protected monument) and considered the most notable in Spain. Beside it, a bronze sculpture recalls the cheese of Villalón, the pata de mulo sold at its famous Saturday market.
