Cuenca de Campos
Village
Cuenca de Campos is a village in the province of Valladolid, in the Tierra de Campos comarca, with about 180 inhabitants, on the Camino de Santiago de Madrid. Its economy is based on cereals and legumes and on dairy sheep farming, with the lechazo churro and the Tierra de Campos squab among its most prized products. It preserves the churches of Santos Justo y Pastor and of Santa María del Castillo, and the convent of Poor Clares of San Bernardino de Siena, founded in 1455, today badly deteriorated since its exclaustration in 1967. On a hill stands the Torre del Conjuradero, from which storms were conjured away in the Middle Ages by sending the clouds to other comarcas; the present building is recent, as the earlier one was destroyed.
